Bhaktapur : Pashupatinath Temple

The Pashupatinath Temple, located at Bhaktapur is regarded as the oldest temple in Bhaktpur.  According to Bernier (1970), it might have been constructed after the death of King Yakshya Malla in 1492 by his wife and sons. However, most historians believe that it was built by King Jitra Malla, father of celebrated King Bhupatindra Malla in 1682.

According to legend, Lord Pashupatinath of Deopatan asked the King in a dream to build a replica of the Pashupatinath temple in Bhaktapur. According to another story, the King of Bhaktapur always used to go to visit the temple of Pashupatinath in Deopatan, but one day the Bagmati river was in spate and it was not possible for him to cross it. Then the King gave order to get a temple of Pashupatinath built at Bhaktapur itself. Whatever may be the reason the temple of Pashupatinath at Bhaktapur has the same number of stores and the proportions of the building are also the same as those in Deopatan.
